08-347059-001 City of Punta Gorda

The Department received an application from the City of Punta Gorda to dredge a new channel through mangroves and uplands to create a new connection between the Punta Gorda Isles Canal System and Alligator Creek, part of Gasparilla-Sound Charlotte Harbor Aquatic Preserve.  The application states that the Punta Gorda Isles Canal System is home to approximately 4,300 boaters who currently have only one access point to Charlotte Harbor through the existing Ponce de Leon Inlet.  This project would create a new outlet for these boaters to exit and enter through this channel.  In addition to dredging of uplands and mangroves to create this channel, this project also includes new dredging of approximately 0.68 acres within the aquatic preserve.
