The Place to be Next Weekend – Wakulla Wildlife Festival
Want to spend next weekend in a beautiful setting surrounded by native wildlife with an abundance of arts and crafts to explore while music fills the air inside and outside of a magnificent 75-year old lodge?
One place where it will all be happening is at Wakulla Springs State Park, located just south of Tallahassee, where the annual Wakulla Wildlife Festival takes place on March 19th and 20th. The two-day event, held on the grounds that surround one of the largest and deepest freshwater springs in the world, celebrates the area’s natural environment and rich heritage.
Each year, the Friends of Wakulla Springs sponsors Art on the Terrace inside the beautiful lodge. More than a dozen artists will share their talents through photography, paintings, portraits and prints, carvings, woodworking, gyotaku - a form of Japanese fish printing, and raku - a type of Japanese pottery, to name a few. Handicrafts created by indigenous Amazon women of Ecuador, nature based jewelry and pottery will also be among the featured handiwork of the various artists.
History buffs can step back to a time when flintknappers, spinner’s wheels and blacksmiths were a common sight. A butterfly presentation will appease nature lovers while the adventurists can experience a virtual dive into the underground wonders seen through the eyes of a cave diver. Bands will provide a variety of music, ranging from bluegrass to traditional to the sounds of a 19-year old Native American flute virtuoso, and the fancy footwork of the local Hot Pepper Stepper cloggers will keep the energy going.
An extraordinary selection of food vendors ranges from fresh coastal seafood, to slow-cooked southern BBQ, to exotic and health conscious dishes, while lighter fare is always available inside the Wakulla Soda Fountain. Or for an extra special treat, reserve a seat in the Lodge dining room overlooking the spring for a hearty and delectable indulgence.
