Florida’s First Lady Ann Scott, the Florida Department of Education, the Florida
Department of Environmental Protection, and the Florida Department of State are
teaming up again to encourage reading during the summer break. On Wednesday,
June 22, First Lady Ann Scott and participating agencies are taking the Summer
Literacy Adventure to Florida Caverns State Park. Mrs. Scott will share a short
reading passage with students while Florida Caverns State Park Manager Chris
Hawthorne and Florida Park Service Director Donald Forgione highlight the
Florida Caverns and the adventurous opportunities within this state park.
The Summer Literacy Adventure, launched in May by the First Lady, invites
students to pledge to read a certain number of books this summer. Students can
take the pledge by visiting
www.justreadflorida.com. A select school with the most participating
students in the Summer Literacy Adventure will be recognized during the 2011-12
school year, and the Department of Environmental Protection will also reward the
winning school with a free pass to any state park.
