TALLAHASSEE – Through collaborative efforts of the Florida Department of
Environmental Protection (DEP), the Florida Department of Education, the Collins
Center’s Sustainable Florida Program and Florida’s Foundation, the Florida Green
School Awards application is now available online. Students, teachers and school
administrators are encouraged to apply now through June 21, 2011.
The Florida Green School Awards will recognize activities and projects that
take place during the 2010-2011 school year, including efforts related to
recycling; green learning environments (including indoor and outdoor
facilities); exemplary green curriculum or teacher professional development
programs; green service learning projects; and green policies or partnerships.
Applicants are encouraged to apply every year not only for recognition, but to
document and track the impact of their programs over time.
Applications will be reviewed by a select panel of judges convened by the
Sustainable Florida Program of the Collins Center for Public Policy. Fifteen
finalists will be selected and invited to the formal awards ceremony, “Learn
Green” Green Schools Conference and Expo in Palm Beach County in November 2011,
where the five statewide winners will be announced.
The Florida Green School Awards program recognizes and documents the growing
number of initiatives that generate cost savings and create healthy and
productive places for learning. Over 30 finalists from across the state have
received cash awards and recognition for their efforts since the program started
in 2008. Last year, applicants for the Florida Green School Awards program saved
$5.2 million dollars through their combined green school efforts.
