NAPLES – Governor Crist recently signed a
proclamation declaring November 15
America Recycles Day. To celebrate, DEP’s Easy As One initiative, Goodwill
Industries and Collier County Waste Reduction and Recycling hosted a free
collection event today in Naples. At the event, DEP collected more than 500
retail plastic bags for recycling and more than 30 used cell phones were
collected and donated to charity. Goodwill Industries collected thousands of
computers, small appliances and electronics and four tons of paper for
recycling.
“Celebrating America Recycles Day, DEP, Goodwill and Collier County Waste
Reduction illustrated how easy individual actions lead to big results,” said DEP
South District Director Jon Iglehart. “This event prevented thousands pounds of
items from reaching the waste stream and benefited worthy charities.”
The event was coordinated by Goodwill Industries and Collier County Waste
Reduction and Recycling to celebrate the nationwide America Recycles Day.
Participants were educated about alternatives to throwing items in the trash,
such as donating to charity or recycling. Attendees were also given information
on the negative environmental impacts that result when items enter the waste
stream. In addition, DEP provided a free day pass to any Florida State Park to
all attendees bringing in items for recycling.
“Collier County Solid Waste Management Department thanks DEP for this great
partnership opportunity,” said Collier County Recycling Coordinator Jodi
Walters. “The event was a huge success today and helped the environment by
collecting many recyclable items.”
For those who were unable to attend the event, many retail grocery stores
have implemented plastic bag recycling programs to make recycling easy for their
shoppers. To find a plastic bag recycling location, go to
