TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP)
newly redesigned Florida State Parks website,
www.FloridaStateParks.org,
recently received an award from the National Association of Government
Webmasters (NAGW). The website, which was launched in early 2010, received the
NAGW’s Members’ Choice Award for 2010 and also finished as a top three finalist
for the Pinnacle Award. The website received high marks for being easy to
navigate, visually appealing, informative and offering accessibility features.
“Winning the Members’ Choice award and being recognized amongst our
government peers is a great honor,” said DEP Secretary Mimi Drew. “DEP staff
worked countless hours to redesign and improve the look, functionality and
content of the Florida State Parks website for the 2.5 million web users that
visit the site annually. I am proud to see their hard work recognized.”
FloridaStateParks.org was redesigned by staff from DEP’s Office of External
Affairs in conjunction with Florida State Parks. The in-house redesign saved the
state of Florida more than $255,000. The new site features streamlined
navigation, multiple accessibility features, beautiful park photos and abundant
information, including featured deals and discounts and one tank adventures.
The NAGW Pinnacle Awards are given to local governments for website
excellence. This year’s awards drew 39 entrants from across the country in four
categories; three categories for cities and counties based on population and one
state and non-governmental organization (NGO) category.
Judges reviewed websites based on team size, content, organization, design,
function, accessibility, standards and interactivity. The Florida State Parks
website was a top three finalist in the NGO category and was selected as the
Members’ Choice Award winner through online voting by NAGW members.
