Statement by Governor Charlie Crist Regarding the Tamiami Trail Modifications Project

?The State of Florida is extremely pleased that our federal partners, the United States Army Corps of Engineers, have awarded the contract for the construction of the Tamiami Trail modifications project. Florida remains steadfast in our commitment to restore America?s Everglades for future generations.?

Statement from DEP Secretary Michael W. Sole Regarding the Tamiami Trail Modifications Project

?The construction of Tamiami Trail, which we anticipate will begin before the end of the year, will result in a more natural flow of water into Everglades National Park, and is a key component of Everglades restoration. By restoring a more natural flow of water to the south Florida ecosystem, Florida and its federal partners are reviving the habitat for more than 60 threatened and endangered species, as well as ensuring a more reliable supply of water and flood protection for South Floridians.

BACKGROUND:

Authorized in 1989 together with the expansion of Everglades National Park, the Modified Water Deliveries project is a critical step for the wider restoration of America?s Everglades. Its full completion, including the construction of structures in the L-67 levees and elevating Tamiami Trail, is essential for implementing a suite of restoration projects included in the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan. These projects will further restore sheet flow to the remnant Everglades.
