Statement from Florida Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Michael W. Sole Regarding the Environmental Regulation Commission's Adoption of the California Motor Vehicle Emission Standards Rule

“The Florida Department of Environmental Protection applauds the Environmental Regulation Commission’s (ERC) adoption of the California Motor Vehicle Emissions Standards Rule. We are grateful for the leadership of the ERC commissioners to ensure that the rule received a thorough review as well as important stakeholder and industry comments.

“The rule represents an important step in carrying out the Governor’s initiatives to reduce greenhouse gases. Implementation of the rule plus adoption of the federal CAFE standards is expected to provide an additional two million metric ton reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2016 and 10 million metric tons by 2020; the equivalent of taking nearly 500,000 passenger vehicles off of the road per year through 2016, and then more than 1.1 million per year through 2020.”
