RIVER RANCH – In a first-of-its-kind wilderness
trip entitled, Expedition Headwaters, An Everglades
Journey to Remember, two teams of kayakers and
hikers are conducting a wilderness expedition of the
Shingle Creek to Lake Okeechobee corridor. The group
will traverse 140 miles, traveling both by kayak and on
foot along this previously untraveled route. Throughout
the 12-day journey, the team will explore the headwaters
of the River of Grass and learn about the efforts to
restore the ecosystem.
Upon arriving at the Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission (FWC) check station on the
Florida Trail, the teams will hear from leading experts
about Florida’s aggressive land acquisition buying
program that puts lands in need of restoration into
state ownership.
In April 2006, Florida completed the acquisition of
lands needed for the Kissimmee River Restoration
Project. The final 12,000 acres were purchased for $35.8
million completing the total acquisition of more than
102,000 acres.
The presentation will be followed by a media
availability.
