INDIAN RIVER COUNTY -- Florida’s ‘green’ budget signed a month ago by
Governor Jeb Bush included more than $42 million to expand and improve local
parks across the state – a 100 percent increase from 2004. Funded through the
Department of Environmental Protection’s Florida Recreation Development
Assistance Program, $312,500 will go to Indian River County to renovate two
local parks and enhance nearby communities by increasing outdoor recreation and
improving public access to natural Florida.
“This funding allows the local government to preserve and protect Florida’s
natural areas for families to enjoy,” said Governor Bush. “Investing in green
space expands recreational areas, connects communities and improves our quality
of life.”
Indian River County projects funded in this year’s budget include:
- Soccer Field, City of Fellsmere – Funding will be used for
Basketball courts, picnic facilities, playground, bike trail, renovation
of soccer field, landscaping, and parking.
- Senior League, City of Fellsmere – Improvements will include a bike
trail, basketball court, soccer field, and renovation of the baseball
field, picnic facilities, playground, landscaping, and parking
“Florida’s environment should be preserved for the enjoyment of its residents
and visitors,” said Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Colleen M.
Castille. “This funding provides local communities with more opportunities to
grow their quality of life.”
Administered by the Department of Environmental Protection, the Florida
Recreation Development Assistance Program is a competitive grant program,
providing funds to local communities for public outdoor recreation. Over the
last six years, Florida has invested nearly $161 million to improve local park
facilities through the grant program – a 50 percent increase compared to the
previous five years - funding more than 1,230 projects statewide.
