National Take Pride in America Will Recognize Volunteers

TALLAHASSEE— Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Secretary Take Pride in America logo Colleen M. Castille and Deputy Secretary Bob Ballard are pleased to announce an opportunity for Florida’s volunteers to receive national recognition through the Take Pride in America National Awards Program. The annual awards honor the significant contributions individuals and organizations make to preserve America's lands.

“Florida is home to a wealth of natural, cultural and historical treasures, making it a unique and exceptional place to live and work,” said Secretary Castille. “The tireless efforts of volunteers play a vital role in protecting and conserving Florida’s natural lands.”

Take Pride in America is part of President George W. Bush's USA Freedom Corps, which is dedicated to fostering a culture of service to others. The national partnership works with governors and state and local organizations to launch volunteer conservation projects.

Outstanding volunteer efforts are rewarded with presidential recognition. This year’s winners and finalists will be invited to a national awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. where they will receive a Take Pride in America national award certificate.

Volunteers play an important role in protecting cultural, historical and natural resources within Florida’s award-winning state parks. The 82 groups that comprise the invaluable 5,000 member volunteer-based Citizen Support Organization worked hours equivalent to 436 full time employees and raised $1.4 million for state parks during the past year.

“When it comes to protecting Florida’s resources, no effort, large or small, should go unrecognized,” said Deputy Secretary Ballard. “I encourage all volunteers, who keep Florida’s parks and lands beautiful, to apply for a Take Pride in America national award.”

Nominations will be accepted through June 30, 2004, on-line at www.takepride.gov or by mailing an application to Take Pride in America, Room 3459, 1849 C Street NW, Washington D.C. 20240.
