Senate Confirms
Colleen M. Castille as DEP Secretary
--Castille brings environmental, local government expertise
to Department--
TALLAHASSEE— The Florida Senate confirmed Colleen M. Castille as
Secretary of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) this
weekend, finalizing Governor Jeb Bush’s February appointment.
“Because of Governor Bush’s vision and leadership, Florida’s environment is
better cared for today than it was five years ago,” said Secretary Castille.
“The Department will continue to strive for environmental excellence as we
restore America’s Everglades, conserve more land and protect Florida's
freshwater springs, rivers and coastal waters.”
As DEP Secretary, Castille administers Florida’s environmental regulatory and
law enforcement programs, and oversees the acquisition and management of public
lands -- including Florida’s 158 award-winning state parks. Castille is also
responsible for guiding the development and regulation of Florida’s water
resources through the State’s five water management districts.
“I am committed to furthering Florida’s environmental priorities and building
upon our many successes,” said Secretary Castille. “Firm and fair enforcement
coupled with strong partnerships and common-sense environmental management
provides the foundation for a healthy economy.”
In 2003, Castille was appointed Secretary of the Department of Community
Affairs (DCA), where she supervised community growth, environmental assessment,
local and state comprehensive planning, community rehabilitation and disaster
planning. During her tenure, Secretary Castille secured local government support
for improved wastewater management, land conservation and the protection of
natural habitat in the Florida Keys.
Before her appointment to DCA, Castille served as Chief Cabinet Aide to
Governor Bush, specializing in environmental matters.
