Visit the LIFE Program Profile and Slide Show at “Hands on the Land” Web Site

The Site Profile and Site Tour (slide show) are now available at the National ‘Hands on the Land’ Exit Disclaimer Web site. The LIFE Program recently received a small seed grant from the USDA Forest Service to enable participation in a national network of educational sites on federal lands. Special thanks to Mark Ames (shown helping students examine a soil core) for his work with this and other LIFE program sites. Mark finishes his work with DEP this month.

Launch of Savannas Preserve LIFE program

LIFE Savannas Preserve State Park Launch

Project partners from the St. Lucie School District joined students, teachers and DEP staff to formally launch the LIFE program at Savannas Preserve State Park (SPSP). Students participated in their second of four field experiences during the school year by investigating various plant strategies for capturing sunlight for photosynthesis. Gulf Guardian Certificate of Appreciation

LIFE-ANERR Receives Gulf Guardian Certificate of Appreciation

The LIFE-Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR) program received a certificate of appreciation for its efforts toward youth education. The program is considered a ‘Gulf Guardian’ for the work it does conducting outdoor environmental field labs with Apalachicola seventh grade students and their teachers.

Jennifer Oetting

Jennifer Oetting Joins the Office of Environmental Education

Jennifer Oetting recently joined the Office of Environmental Education where she will serve as an Environmental Education Specialist. Previously, she worked as a Petroleum Cleanup Site Manager in DEP’s Bureau of Petroleum Storage Systems and prior to that she worked at the Florida Natural Areas Inventory organization. Jennifer received a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science from the University of West Florida.

Water’s Journey Teacher Training

On December 2nd, four teachers participated in a workshop based on the award-winning video, Water’s Journey: The Hidden Rivers of Florida. The workshop focused on the Teachers’ Guide for the video and was conducted at Ichetucknee Springs State Park by Vicki Crisp from the Northeast Florida Education Consortium.
