DEP and Partners Launch LIFE-Wakulla Springs Service Learning Program

DEP Secretary Colleen M. Castille joined program partners from UF/IFAS Extension, the Wakulla County School District and the Division of Recreation and Parks to formally launch the LIFE-Wakulla Springs Service Learning Program. The event took place while students and teachers from Riversprings Middle School conducted field labs measuring tree height, circumference and crown spread following the Florida Champion Tree Program. LIFE-Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve Completes Second Year

Students from Franklin County Schools completed the last of four field experiences to finish the second year of the LIFE Program. The last field experience for the year was held at FSU’s Turkey Point Marine Lab and conducted jointly with the staff of the Saturday at the Sea program. Students examined adaptations of marine organisms including barnacles, plankton and fish.

Students from Sebastian Middle School Conduct a Beach Profile

In less than ideal weather conditions, middle school students from Sebastian Middle School completed labs a the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve South Beach. As part of the beach profile, students measured the beach slope, sand particle size and longshore drift.

Congratulations to Angie Golubovich, Florida Marine Educator of the Year!

Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve’s (GTMNERR) Environmental Educator Angie Golubovich was recently awarded the John Beakley Marine Science Educator of the Year award. The award, presented by the Florida Marine Science Educators Association, recognizes educators who demonstrate a dedication to promoting and developing marine science programs in Florida.
