LIFE - Clay County

LIFE lab

The LIFE Clay County Program is a partnership between the Department of Environmental Protection, Clay County School District, and the North Fork Leadership Center. Approximately 950 sixth grade students from at least 10 Clay County schools participate in 2 field experiences each year to the North Fork Leadership Center, which is owned by the Gateway Girl Scout Council. Funding for this program comes from a grant the United States Department of Defense Education Activity, which supports military connected students in hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities.

In the fall of 2012, teachers from eight schools participated in a curriculum integration workshop, where they co-developed field labs with DEP staff that align to their curriculum. Field labs address priority topics that have been identified by the participating teachers and utilize the unique natural resources available at the North Fork. This outdoor classroom provides an opportunity to experience natural and human-created characteristics of the environment in a natural setting. The field labs engage students in using scientific methods, making observations and inferences, using technology such as probeware to collect and analyze data, and use higher level critical thinking in the context of science.
