Pollution Prevention Week
DEP
celebrated National Pollution Prevention Week 2008 from September 15 - 21 with
the theme “Greening Florida’s Future” which focused on "green" cleaning methods. To celebrate the state and nationally recognized week, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
hosted a variety of statewide events promoting everything from proper household hazardous waste disposal to the importance of green cleaning in schools and easy ways citizens and businesses can “green” their daily practices. Statewide events included hazardous materials drop-offs at local household hazardous waste facilities in exchange for a free microfiber cloth; “green cleaning kit” giveaways at area businesses; and educational events encouraging environmentally friendly cleaning practices in Florida’s schools, businesses and homes.
Proclamation
In an effort to “green” Florida’s future, Governor Charlie Crist recently signed a
proclamation [PDF - 347 KB] designating September 15-21 as Pollution Prevention Week.

Greening Florida's Future
As part of its efforts to promote the importance of safer cleaning in
schools, DEP participated in the Florida School
Plant Manager Association’s (FSPMA) annual conference.
The conference, attended by approximately 250
participants statewide, was held September 15-19 in
Daytona Beach. DEP gave a presentation on
“Green” Cleaning in schools, as well as hosted an
information
booth to provide further resources to participants on
safer cleaning practices. For more information, visit
www.fspma.com.
To encourage “green” cleaning in businesses, DEP donated several
“green” cleaning kits, containing microfiber cloths,
environmentally-friendly cleaning products and ingredients and
directions for creating homemade chemical-free products to the
Clara White Mission in Jacksonville. The Mission will use the
cleaning products as part of their janitorial services job
training program, teaching trainees how to clean in an
environmentally-friendly manner. For more information on the
Clara White Mission, visit

Green Cleaning
Green Cleaning is defined as cleaning practices that protect health without harming
the environment. Green cleaning products are typically biodegradable, non-toxic and
do not accumulate in living tissue. Green cleaning practices can reduce risks to
human health and safety and the environment. They prevent pollution and can even save money when compared
to traditional chemical cleaners.
