Silver Springs State Park Management Plan Advisory Group

In January 23, 2013, the Florida Governor and Cabinet, sitting as the Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund (Trustees), approved the termination of the lease to Festival Fun Parks, LLC of the Silver Springs attraction, effective September 30, 2013. On October 1, 2013, the property was incorporated into the existing Trustees lease to the DEP Division of Recreation and Parks for Silver River State Park. Concurrently, the Division renamed the park as Silver Springs State Park.

This webpage was created to provide a convenient venue to provide background information and meeting coordination for the Silver Springs State Park Management Plan Amendment Advisory Group. The purpose of the advisory group is to work with Division staff, providing input and advice on the amendment of the approved Silver River State Park unit management plan to integrate the newly-leased property into the existing state park. In accordance with Chapter 259.32, Florida Statutes, the advisory group is made up of members of the community surrounding the park, adjacent land owners, local elected officials, other state and federal land management agencies, recreational user groups, environmental advocacy groups and the park's volunteer organization.

The plan amendment will outline the Divisions' long-term program for managing natural and cultural resources on the additional property and will articulate a land use and development concept for future development (or redevelopment) of park infrastructure.

Four advisory group meetings are anticipated between October, 2013 and early 2014. Meetings will consist of presentations by Division staff and outside experts, a tour of the park property and facilitated visioning exercises and brainstorming sessions to develop one or more conceptual plans for the new state park. The products of the advisory group will be presented to the public at a workshop in the Ocala/Silver Springs area, when these meetings are concluded. Following the public workshop, the Division will submit the draft Silver Springs Management Plan Amendment to the Acquisition and Restoration Council in Tallahassee, whose review will include an additional public workshop.

These links provide access to the background materials, meeting agendas and meeting summaries for the advisory group and the general public.

Although state park advisory group meetings are open to the public, they are intended to be focus-group meetings for Division staff to receive comments and recommendations on the park management plan from individuals appointed to the advisory group to represent specific organizations, groups or interests.  A reasonable amount of time is scheduled at the end of each meeting to accept brief public comments.  As noted above, a public workshop dedicated to receiving comments on the results of the advisory group's meetings will be held at the conclusion of this phase of the planning process.

The mission of the Florida Park Service is to provide resource-based recreation while preserving, interpreting and restoring natural and cultural resources.
