The Department's Oil and Gas Program has permitting and regulatory authority for parties interested in exploration or production of hydrocarbons in Florida. Primary responsibilities include conservation of oil and gas resources, correlative rights protection, health and public safety and environmental protection.

The oil and gas permitting process is governed by Chapter 377 and Rules 62C-25 through 62C-30, Florida Administrative Code. The Department's pollution control authority is also applicable to drilling. Under these laws and regulations the Department issues permits for the drilling of new wells, geophysical exploration, operational permits and permit renewals which are required every five years.
