American Red Cross Offers Sheltering Tips

Tallahassee—Now that evacuations have begun and the likelihood of large-scale sheltering becomes more and more likely, the American Red Cross is recommending that people prepare a shelter kit to take with them when seeking refuge from the storm.

“Evacuees may need to stay at a shelter for 24-72 hours during an emergency”, says Chris Floyd, Director of Emergency Services for the Capital Area Chapter of the Red Cross. “In order for people to keep comfortable for that period of time, they need to make some smart decisions about what they take with them to a shelter”.

Items that can make your stay at a shelter more comfortable include:

  • Special dietary foods, snacks or comfort food
  • Bedding, pillow, blanket, etc.
  • Extra clothing
  • Medicines and medical supplies
  • Toiletry items
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Diapers, infant and elderly/disabled necessities
  • Books, magazines, games, cards
  • Important papers, credit cards, cash and identification

Due to health and safety concerns, pets are not allowed in shelters. If you must seek shelter from the approaching storm, make sure not to leave your pet behind and evacuate them to a safe, prearranged location until you are allowed to return to home.

All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary contributions of time and money from the American people. You can help the victims of Hurricane Dennis and thousands of other disasters across the country each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to those in need. Call 1-800-HELP-NOW or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish). Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund may be sent to your local American Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013. Internet users can make a secure online contribution by visiting www.redcross.org.
