Land Acquisition Process Highlights
Florida scrub-jay

Preserving habitat for endangered species, like the Florida scrub-jay, is a priority

Acquisition Management Strategy

The Florida Forever Acquisition Management Strategy combines land acquisition with a number of innovative approaches to conservation and resource management.

  • Acquisition: Acquiring important conservation and recreation land is vital to protecting large ecosystems, greenways, wildlife habitat, outdoor recreation space, wetlands, forests, coastal areas and significant historical sites, as well as threatened and endangered species.
  • Grants: Matching grants to local governments provide for acquisition of lands for parks, trails and green spaces within urban areas.
  • Recreation Facilities: Investment of management funds for capital improvements on public lands, such as facilities to provide access to visitors soon after they are acquired. This includes the initial removal of invasive plants, the construction of fire lanes, access roads and trails and the construction, improvement, enlargement or extension of facility signs.
  • Restoration: Restoration of land and water areas.
  • Water Protection: Water resource development and supply to safeguard Florida's groundwater and surface waters so that a sufficient water supply is available for Florida's natural systems and its citizens.
  • Easements: Conservation easements to protect land from development while keeping it on the tax rolls, allowing the owner to continue managing it and realize an economic return.
