Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail
Designated as a segment of the Florida National Scenic Trail, this trail circles the second largest freshwater lake in the contiguous United States. The trail itself is located atop the Herbert Hoover Dike, which surrounds the lake for flood protection, and provides views ranging from scenic lakeside to working agricultural landscapes. It also takes users near and through communities that are at the heart of agriculture in this part of the state, such as Clewiston and Belle Glade. The area affords opportunities for viewing wildlife, particularly in fall and winter, when birds such as herons, egrets, and a variety of wintering waterfowl are abundant. And of course, fishing opportunities are endless.

Hikers and mountain bikers are able to access the trail from numerous locations. In addition to those shown on the accompanying map, the Army Corps of Engineers produces a brochure (http://pillar.saj.usace.army.mil/recreation/images/brochures/lostbro.pdf) that is a helpful companion, showing additional access points and indicating segment mileage. Also, for hikers, the Florida Trail Association (FTA) produces a detailed hiking guide and segment-by-segment maps which are very useful for hiking the Florida National Scenic Trail. Equestrians are also able to access the trail from various locations. Port Mayaca, Chancy Bay, Harney Pond, Moore Haven and Clewiston Park are among the options. Please note that the trail route requires users to exit the levee at certain locations. Use caution in areas adjacent to roadways.

Lightning storms are frequent during summer months and may approach with little warning. Seek shelter or low ground if you encounter a storm.
