Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad
State Trail
The
Tallahassee/St. Marks Historic Railroad Trail runs from Floridas
capital city, past the Apalachicola National Forest, and ends
in the coastal community of St. Marks. Through the early 1900s,
this historic railroad corridor was used to carry cotton from
the plantation belt to the coast for shipment to textile mills
in England and New England. Today, as a paved trail, it provides
an excellent workout for street bikers, walkers and skaters.
It also provides opportunities for horseback riding on the
adjacent unpaved trail, and access to the Munson Hills Off
Road Trails in the National Forest. St. Marks offers seafood,
fishing or San Marcos Apalache Historic State Park to top
off your journey.

Railroad State Trail
Resurfacing Now Completed
The Tallahassee-St.
Marks State Trail was the first rail-trail in the state’s
system of greenways and trails to be paved and it was
originally built with an 8-foot wide surface. After twenty
years of service, it was necessary to address wear and tear
and safety issues and, in a phased, resurfacing project, the
Trail was also widened to 12 feet to meet state and national
standards.
The new trail surface and trail amenities have now been
completed for the full 16 miles of this State Trail. The Trail
is now open for public use from the Main Trailhead in Leon
County through to the City of St. Marks in Wakulla County.
