Steps to Becoming a Designated Property

  3. Create a “Green Team.”

A “Green Team” is a group of employees who will be responsible for ensuring that all environmental improvement practices the hotel has implemented are being performed accurately and on time.

  4. Conduct an Environmental Assessment [DOC - 320 KB].

Allow the “Green Team” to identify and evaluate opportunities to improve environmental performance by conducting a walk through of the entire property.

  5. Establish goals and identify environmental improvement [XLS - 71 KB] projects.

Include both short and long term benchmarks. Project ideas can be viewed using the Best Management Practices or a by requesting a CD-ROM from the Green Lodging staff. To receive and maintain designation status, basic improvement projects must be performed in the areas of communication, water conservation, energy efficiency, waste reduction and clean air practices.

  6. Schedule an on-site designation review.

Once the designation criteria are met, schedule a brief on-site visit [DOC - 323 KB] from a trained assessor. If the facility has met the necessary criteria, it will be awarded the One Palm designation and will be able to take advantage of all the benefits that come with designation.

  7. Maintain a One Palm status to advance to the next level.

Complete the Environmental Self-Assessment and Planning Checklist and have the “Green Team” submit it to the Green Lodging Program office. Another designation review will be performed and upon approval a Two Palm designation will be awarded.

  8. Continue to monitor and evaluate the program.

Have the “Green Team” periodically monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of improvement projects while making any changes necessary to improve performance. A Two Palm designated facility can qualify for Three Palm designation after documenting continued improvement for three consecutive years.
