Whereas, earth science is an all-encompassing term for sciences related to the earth, including geology, meteorology, physical oceanography, and hydrologoy; and
Whereas, the earth sciences are important for protection Florida’s residents and the environment from the natural hazards that pose a threat to our economy and quality of life; and
Whereas, the earth sciences benefit from the participation of citizen scientists in understanding and protecting Florida's lakes, rivers and springs; and
Whereas, the earth sciences monitor changes in our natural systems to predict, prepare and mitigate for the effects of natural hazards including flooding, coastal erosion, landslides, droughts, expansive soils and sinkholes; and
Whereas, the earth sciences provide the foundation for sound environmental management, conservation and land use through better understanding of earth systems; and
Whereas, the earth sciences use observations and measurements form earth and space to safeguard public health, increase environmental protection and encourage wise stewardship of Florida’s mineral, energy and water resources; and
Whereas, the earth sciences are critical to understanding Florida’s aquifer and groundwater, supporting restoration of America’s Everglades and protecting Florida’s freshwater springs; and
Whereas, the earth sciences are essential in understanding the impact of hurricanes on Florida’s coast, repairing our famed beaches and safeguarding Floridians form the effects of storms; and
Whereas, the earth sciences provide better understanding, protection and management of Florida’s cultural, historical and pre-historical resources;
Now, therefore, I Jeb Bush, Governor of the State of Florida, do hereby extend greetings and best wishes to all observing Earth Science Week, October 8-14, 2006.
