Earth Science Week 2007
Earth Science Week 2006

Please join us as we celebrate Earth Science Week at our Annual Open
House to be held Wednesday, October 17th at the Gunter Building, 904
West Tennessee Street, Tallahassee, Florida from 10:00am until 3:00. The
Gunter Building is located on the campus of Florida State University at
the corner of Woodward and Tennessee Streets and a map to our facility
is available at:
http://www.dep.state.fl.us/geology/aboutthefgs/fgsmap.htm
Please note that the names of two streets on the map have changed.
Palmetto Drive is now called Academic Way and Antarctic Circle is called
Antarctic Way.
You can find pictures and a short description of our 2006 Open House at:
http://www.dep.state.fl.us/geology/events/earth_sci_week_2006.htm
This year Florida State University’s Geology Department is partnering with us
to offer tours of their Antarctic Research Facility (just across the street from
the Gunter Building). I’ll be sending out information on the timing of those
tours with later messages.
On the evening of October 17 (6:30 to 8:30 pm) we will hold our annual Scout
Night which assists Webelos Scouts in earning their geology badge. If anyone is
interested in participating please email me with the number of scouts in your
group. We are currently at capacity for this event; however, you may be placed
on a waiting list if you wish. For information please contact Paulette Bond by
phone (850.488.4191) or by e-mail at:
Paulette.Bond@dep.state.fl.us.
Parking for Florida Geological Survey’s Earth Science Week Open House and
Scout Night
One of the best options for daytime parking is a pay
lot associated with the Co-Cathedral of St Thomas More, which is
diagonally across Tennessee St. from the FGS (Gunter Building). The charge is
$3.00 in quarters, dollar bills or five dollar bills-the machine will make
change. You may reach the lot by taking Dewey St. to Virginia St. and turning
west onto Virginia Street. Virginia Street ends at the parking gate to this lot.
You can also get to the lot from Carolina Street which runs between Woodward
Avenue and Dewey Street. From Woodward go about a half block; from Dewey go
about 1 ½ blocks, then turn south on Pope St. and continue to Virginia St. Turn
right on Virginia St. and continue until you arrive at the parking gate. Some of
these streets may also have parking available on the street.
We may have one or two visitor’s spaces available on
Antarctic Way. To check availability of these, turn onto Antarctic Way
from Academic Way and continue around until you come to a series of angle
parking spaces marked “Reserved for State Business.” You may park in any open
space there; you will need to come into the building (middle floor-you’ll see a
staircase from the parking spaces) and get a visitor’s permit to put on your
dashboard.
FSU Visitor Parking is described on FSU’s
website at:
https://parking.fsu.edu/gen_2.asp. There are some parking meters
available on Academic Way close to the Gunter Building costing $0.50 an hour
(quarters) but they are often full. FSU’s nearby parking garage is available
to permit holders only. FSU has a visitor’s pay lot near Doak Campbell
stadium; it is $1.00 per hour and a bit of a hike to our building.
For scout families attending our evening event
we will have enough spaces available in the two gated lots on either side of
our building. If you arrive around 6:30 we will try to have someone outside
with a gate card to let you in. If you arrive later, pull up to the gate and
send someone in. We will send someone right back with a card.
