Hydrilla, an exotic invasive plant, requires constant removal efforts

In the central Florida region, the aquatic preserve staff is responsible for resource management
activities on more than 6,000 acres of sovereign submerged lands. The team coordinates interagency
activities such as working group meetings, litter removal and project review. The team evaluates
projects that may impact the aquatic preserve, fosters stakeholder participation in protecting the
preserve with special projects like the Wekiva Promise program and provides community assistance with
exotic plant control. Team members also serve in an advisory capacity on numerous technical committees
that seek to resolve resource management issues.

Plans are currently underway for additional education and outreach events in 2011, in partnership with
other agencies and community organizations such as
"The Promise of the Wekiva," a magazine
promoting ecological awarenes of the Wekiva River, is due out in early 2011. Limited quantities of
educational materials on aquatic resources are
available from the education coordinator. Check our
calendar for dates and location of various events.

A series of projects, with research partners from well beyond the Wekiva – Middle St. Johns basin,
continue to deliver new material. The research carried out in the Wekiva – St. Johns Basin will help
us understand the impacts people have on this environment and will assist us in determining ways to
re-establish natural ecosystems where possible. Recent and current studies
