  • History Bike Gainesville VII - From Inglis to the Gulf - Cross Florida Barge Canal
    Sat, Apr 29, 9 am - 12 pm
    Withlacoochee Bay Trail, Crystal River
HBG VII will be reflecting on Earth Day 2017 by focusing our ride on one of the most controversial undertakings by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Florida, The Cross-Florida Barge Canal. Renamed the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway, the canal is now considered one of the greatest achievements by environmental protectors in state history.
Guest speaker on this ride will be biologist Jamie Letendre of Florida Coastal Office. The ride will start and end at the parking lot of the Withlacoochee Bay Trail, off US 19/98, .5 mile south of Inglis, Florida. The route is a 10 mile - round trip, ride along a paved trail adjacent to the canal. We will head west from the parking lot to the trail terminus at the Gulf of Mexico, stopping at overlooks to discuss the history and ecology of the area along canal.
