Turkey Creek and the St. Sebastian River are the main freshwater tributaries
of the aquatic preserve.
The tidal influence of the Sebastian Inlet and wind driven currents provide
flushing of the aquatic preserve and regulate its salinity.
This aquatic preserve is characterized by the overlap of temperate and
subtropical zones along with the convergence of fresh and brackish water
systems that create a highly diverse ecosystem.

Indian River Lagoon Aquatic Preserves System Management Plan Update
The Indian River Lagoon
Aquatic Preserves Management Plan is being updated. This management plan covers Banana River
Aquatic Preserve, Indian River-Malabar to Vero Beach
Aquatic Preserve, Indian River-Vero Beach to Ft. Pierce
Aquatic Preserve and Jensen Beach to Jupiter Inlet
Aquatic Preserve. A draft
plan was produced and made available to the public for
review and comment. Four public meetings were held to present the plan to the public and receive
feedback. Those comments and those of the advisory
committee were reviewed and the plan has been
amended accordingly. The plan was presented to, and
Acquisition and Restoration Council at their June
17, 2016 meeting.
