David Herbster, Administrator

Mangroves are a Valuable Coastal Resource

Red Mangrove

Mangroves:
  • Provide food for fish & shellfish

  • Filter pollutants and trap sediments

  • Nursery grounds for fish, crustaceans and shellfish

  • Nesting and rookeries for coastal birds

  • Shoreline stabilization

  • Serve as storm buffers by reducing wind and wave action in shallow shoreline areas

The 1996 Mangrove Trimming and Preservation Act (403.9321 - 403.9333 F.S.)

  • Provides protection while allowing a view for waterfront property owners.
  • No defoliation, removal or destruction of mangrove trees.
  • Authorization from DEP may be required before mangroves are trimmed
  • You may need to hire a certified, professional mangrove trimmer, depending on the size of the mangroves
  • Proper Trimming is important because improper trimming kills mangroves
