Emission Sources
Air General Permits - Human Crematories
A human crematory is a facility containing one or more combustion units, known as cremators, used solely for the cremation of human bodies within appropriate containers. Cremators are usually made of high-grade steel plate and lined inside with heavy refractory tile or brick. Most cremators have a variety of automatic controls and use gas for heating the cremator.
Florida Statutes (470.025, F.S.) prohibit the use of chlorinated plastics in the containers used for cremations and require human crematories to comply with all applicable state and federal rules.
Rule
62-296.401(6), F.A.C. specifies that crematories be designed and operated for optimum combustion.
Continuous temperature monitors/recorders are also required at all human crematories to provide assurance of proper operation at these facilities
A human crematory may be eligible to operate as an emissions source in Florida under the terms and conditions of an Air General Permit.
