LAFAYETTE COUNTY -- Florida’s ‘green’ budget signed a month ago by
Governor Jeb Bush included more than $42 million to expand and improve local
parks across the state – a 100 percent increase from 2004. Funded through the
Department of Environmental Protection’s Florida Recreation Development
Assistance Program, $250,000 will go to Lafayette County to renovate two local
parks and enhance nearby communities by increasing outdoor recreation and
improving public access to natural Florida.
“This funding allows the local government to preserve and protect Florida’s
natural areas for families to enjoy,” said Governor Bush. “Investing in green
space expands recreational areas, connects communities and improves our quality
of life.”
Lafayette County projects funded in this year’s budget include:
- Mayo Park, Town of Mayo – Improvements include a picnic facility,
playground, walking/hiking trail, security lighting, fencing, parking,
and renovations to existing gazebo, and restrooms.
- Mayo Community Recreation Complex, Lafayette County – Improvements
include a football/soccer field, playground, exercise trail, horseshoe
pit and parking, and renovation of picnic facility, softball field, and
baseball field.
“Florida’s environment should be preserved for the enjoyment of its residents
and visitors,” said Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Colleen M.
Castille. “This funding provides local communities with more opportunities to
grow their quality of life.”
Administered by the Department of Environmental Protection, the Florida
Recreation Development Assistance Program is a competitive grant program,
providing funds to local communities for public outdoor recreation. Over the
last six years, Florida has invested nearly $161 million to improve local park
facilities through the grant program – a 50 percent increase compared to the
previous five years - funding more than 1,230 projects statewide.
