JEFFERSON COUNTY -- Florida’s ‘green’ budget signed a month ago by
Governor Jeb Bush included more than $42 million to expand and improve local
parks across the state – a 100 percent increase from 2004. Funded through the
Department of Environmental Protection’s Florida Recreation Development
Assistance Program, $200,000 will go to Jefferson County to renovate one local
park and enhance nearby communities by increasing outdoor recreation and
improving public access to natural Florida.
“This funding allows the local government to preserve and protect Florida’s
natural areas for families to enjoy,” said Governor Bush. “Investing in green
space expands recreational areas, connects communities and improves our quality
of life.”
The Jefferson County projects funded in this year’s budget is:
- Mamie Scott Drive Improvements – Funding will be used for a picnic
pavilion, renovations to the baseball field, tennis courts, playgrounds
and restrooms, as well as resurfacing the track/trail.
“Florida’s environment should be preserved for the enjoyment of its residents
and visitors,” said Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Colleen M.
Castille. “This funding provides local communities with more opportunities to
grow their quality of life.”
Administered by the Department of Environmental Protection, the Florida
Recreation Development Assistance Program is a competitive grant program,
providing funds to local communities for public outdoor recreation. Over the
last six years, Florida has invested nearly $161 million to improve local park
facilities through the grant program – a 50 percent increase compared to the
previous five years - funding more than 1,230 projects statewide.
