Ozone and Particulate Matter Trends

Various pollutants are found in the air throughout the country. Many of these pollutants occur in low concentrations and do not pose a threat to public health. Others are a problem only in local areas near strong sources of emissions. However, some air pollutants can occur in elevated concentrations spread over wide areas, thereby potentially affecting the health of many people. The two pollutants of most concern in this latter category are "ground-level ozone" and "particulate matter."

Florida's residents and visitors can take comfort in knowing that the state's air is among the cleanest in the nation with respect to ozone and particulate matter. All areas of the state comply with the national ambient air quality standards for these pollutants established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to protect public health. Market forces and air pollution control programs have led to lower ozone and particulate matter levels throughout the state in recent years.
